Welcome to the newly-appointed IHO representatives to the Joint IHO-IOC GEBCO Guiding Committee

News and events — April 2013

The GEBCO community is pleased to announce that Vice Admiral Shin Tani (Chief Hydrographer of Japan) and Commander Peush Pawsey (Joint Director of Survey Operations, National Hydrographic Office, India) are the newly-appointed International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) representatives on the Joint IHO-IOC GEBCO Guiding Committee.

Vice Admiral Tani has made a major contribution to GEBCO’s work and activities for a number of years and we are pleased for his continued involvement and new role. We welcome and look forward to working further with Cdr. Pawsey.

These positions had become vacant due to the retirement from the GEBCO Guiding Committee of Ingénieur général Etienne Cailliau (France) and Dr Kunio Yashima (Japan). We express our thanks and gratitude to Ingénieur général Cailliau and Dr Yashima for their contribution to and involvement in GEBCO’s work.

GEBCO consists of an international group of experts who work on the development of a range of bathymetric data sets and data products with the aim of providing the most authoritative publicly-available bathymetry for the world's oceans. It operates under the joint auspices of the IHO and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) (of UNESCO).

GEBCO's work is directed by a Guiding Committee, consisting of an equal number of representatives from both the IHO and IOC. Its work is supported by technical sub-committees on ocean mapping and undersea feature names plus ad hoc working groups. These committees and groups are made up of experts in many fields and from organisations from all around the world.

During its annual meetings GEBCO hosts a Science Day consisting of oral and poster presentations on subjects relating to seafloor mapping and its applications. Attendance at Science Day is open to all.
