GEBCO and The Nippon Foundation are seeking an Alumni Co-ordinator to work with the Seabed 2030 Project Director and the Project’s Global & Regional Centers to support the engagement and development of the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Alumni (“the Alumni”) in support of the Seabed 2030 mission.
About the project
Seabed 2030 is a collaborative project between The Nippon Foundation and GEBCO. It was launched in 2017 with a vision to produce the definitive, high resolution bathymetric map of the entire world’s oceans by 2030. This initiative is driven by the motivation to empower the world to make policy decisions, sustainably use the ocean and undertake scientific research based on detailed bathymetric information of the Earth’s seabed.
Seabed mapping is vital for the security, safety and economic health of nation states. The 'Blue Economy', according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), is valued at $1.5 trillion a year and creates the equivalent of 31 million full-time jobs as well as having a colossal impact on activities such as environmental change, underwater geo-hazards and communications infrastructure.
About the role
The Alumni Coordinator will have responsibility for delivery of an effective and comprehensive Alumni Engagement & Development Plan (AEDP) that utilizes the skills and experience of members of the Alumni to support a wide range of Seabed 2030 activities; whilst also providing individual and collective development opportunities across a broad spectrum of ocean mapping and technological innovation.
The Alumni Coordinator will provide support for the Project Director in planning, budgeting and achievement of Project milestones. There will also be a requirement to contribute to ad-hoc activities and the preparation of media content.
About the person
Given the highly specialised nature of the role, GEBCO and The Nippon Foundation are seeking applications from professionals with experience in stakeholder management, programme management and working well with culturally diverse groups of people and organizations. They will have a track record of cultivating mutual respect, collaboration, and delivering results in a fast-paced environment. Experience in Ocean Mapping or related subjects is desirable but not essential.
About GEBCO
GEBCO is a non-profit making organisation which relies largely on the voluntary contributions of an enthusiastic international team of geoscientists and hydrographers. GEBCO's work is directed by a Guiding Committee and supported by sub-committees on ocean mapping, undersea feature names, and outreach & public engagement plus ad hoc working groups.
GEBCO operates under the auspices of its two parent organizations, the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and is the only organisation mandated to map the ocean floor of the entire world.
About The Nippon Foundation
The Nippon Foundation’s main objective in the ocean and maritime sphere is to pass on the riches of the oceans to future generations by cultivating human resources and building networks to enable those people and organizations to work together.
About the Alumni
In partnership with The Nippon Foundation, GEBCO contracted with the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping / Joint Hydrographic Center of the University of New Hampshire (CCOM/JHC), to develop and offer the Postgraduate Certificate in Ocean Bathymetry training program. This program has been running since 2004 where GEBCO and The Nippon Foundation jointly select six students each year out of many applicants. At the end of their year at CCOM/JHC, students typically return to their home countries where they apply their new-found knowledge and experience. It is these individuals that form The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Alumni.
